It's a long story, involving a fierce rivalry between two families.
The Riccis were a family of nobility, and riches, while the Pares were one that hoped for the days where they too might have the money needed to live. Throughout the years, the battle raged on, with each having control for a certain amount of time. However, the Riccis won the empire, because those with resources and riches can purchase weaponry and allies, causing a distinct advantage over the poor Pares.
They forced the Pares to work, to make sure they never had to lift their fingers other than to eat food. It was always "do this" or "do that", but never would you hear a thank you from their snobby lips.
The Pares began to multiply quickly, having many children in order to possibly lessen the work load. Eventually, natural resources declined dramatically, bringing the empire into the ground.
The Riccis, who still had the power, decided to take the situations into their own hands by using methods of demise. They'd do whatever they could to eliminate as many Pares as possible, causing a chain reaction, eventually leading them to more food.
The first few ideas were used to simply to get rid of them - there wasn't a system used to eliminate the Pares. Odd disasters occurred, such as animals breaking into the towns, etc. Eventually, the Riccis realized that this was to spontaneous - there were too many variables to consider, so they decided on a set method.
Each year, The Program was initiated. Ten Riccis and ten Pares would be chosen to participate, whether by simple lottery, or out of pure hatred. None of the Contestants knew where they were going, until they woke up in the large island. Grouped up by social class, the Pare and Ricci's were both given their own half of the island, with one obvious goal. To survive. But it's never that simple.
Each morning and each night, the Challenge would be initiated. These Challenges would vary in difficulty, and vary in horridness. By random choice, a certain amount of contestants from each side would participate, with the reward of being able to roam free through both halves of the island, and to be given something to keep them alive.
The limit of victors was unlimited for each test Program. If you could get off the island, you won. Nothing kept you from doing what you want. But each contestant would have to fight.
Because you have to fight for flight.
